COMSOL or Abaqus ?
Regardless of the engineering application or physical phenomena, the COMSOL Multiphysics® programme provides a consistent user interface and experience.
Electromagnetics, structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical engineering add-on modules provide the specialised capability. To interface directly with CAD and other third-party software, choose from a list of LiveLink products. COMSOL Compiler and COMSOL Server are used to deploy simulation applications.

COMSOL Application
Create physics-based models and simulation applications with this software platform. The Model Builder enables you to combine multiple physics in any order for simulations of real-world phenomena. The Application Builder gives you the tools to build your own simulation apps.
ABAQUS MULTIPHYSICS
The Abaqus Unified FEA product suite provides a number of useful features for solving multiphysics problems. These features, which have been developed over many years and completely incorporated as core Abaqus functionality, have been widely employed in numerous engineering applications on current products and engineering projects.
Abaqus has had multiphysics technology since the beginning. Abaqus/Aqua has been simulating hydrodynamic wave loading on flexible structures for offshore pipelines since Abaqus V2 (in 1979). Multiphysics capabilities such as fluid, thermal, and electrical couplings, to mention a few, have been introduced over time.
Multiphysics Capabilities in Abaqus
- Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian
- Hydrostatic-Fluid-Mechanical
- Piezoelectric-Mechanical
- Structural-Acoustic
- Thermal-Electric
- Thermal-Mechanical
- Thermal-Fluid-Mechanical
- Structural-Pore Pressure
How are COMSOL and Abaqus Different ?
You won't be able to solve a problem with Abaqus if it requires a combination of Acoustics, Electromagnetics, Electrochemistry, Optics, Molecular Flow, Microfluidics, and so on. You can easily set up your system of equations in COMSOL, tweak it, relate it to your geometry, and solve it. COMSOL is widely utilised in academia, despite the fact that I have seen numerous corporations use it for their projects.

Abaqus (and Ansys) are faster, more reliable, more resilient in problems such as structural and solid mechanics, impact, vibration, acoustic structural, thermal coupling, and so on, in my experience. Abaqus offers far more efficient solvers than COMSOL 5.1, although COMSOL has lately become much more powerful, with a slew of new capabilities in versions 5.5 and up (for example Standalone application, dark mode. So COMSOL or Abacus ? which one do you prefer 🙂
